was stopped-and-searched by police after entering a designated stop-and-search zone on Pall Mall.

Jacob Rees-Mogg told Nick Ferrari on LBC: “The police have the powers that they need for stop-and-search and it is important that they use them as they see fit.

“We did have difficulties under stop and search as the law did allow the police to declare a zone in London where they could stop anyone under anti-terrorism powers.

“And they used this power to stop me when I was driving a couple of my children along Pall Mall and I was hauled into Waterloo Place.

“When they saw the boot piled full of children’s clothes etcetera, they rather recoiled and went away.”

When asked about rising knife crime figures, the Conservative MP said that had a better track record than Sadiq Khan.

He said: “Policing in London is primarily a responsibility of the Mayor of London and you may notice that within the time you are quoting the Mayor has changed and knife crime was lower under Boris Johnson that it is under Sadiq Khan but I am not going to blame Sadiq Khan for all of it.”

Jacob Rees-Mogg defended ’s role as Home Secretary before she became Prime Minister and said the police had powers to use stop and search to crackdown on knife crime.

He added: “But, we’ve got a silly position of stop and search where people were being stopped quite necessarily.

“They just didn’t like the look of me and at that point they could stop anyone they felt like in these specified zones around sensitive government areas.

“It was a very intrusive power in my view.

“They were perfectly polite but I have to admit I was a little bit grumpy.”
